WHAT TO DO NOW, UNTIL YOUR DENTAL APPOINTMENT

EMERGENCY TOOTHACHE RELIEF:
Toothache presents as pain on one side of your mouth, it may throb and is often excruciating. The tooth will very often have a history of hot and cold sensitivity which has become worse over the past several weeks. It will often also hurt to bite down on the affected tooth.
This is a serious condition which will get worse if not treated. Arrange a dental appointment as soon as you can. After this you will need to relieve the symptoms.
- Take oral pain relief. For adults we recommend 1-2 Nurofen Plus and 2 Panadol every four to six hours depending on your need. Do not exceed this dose, it will not help and can be VERY dangerous to do so. If you are unable to take these medications for medical reasons or are unsure, contact a pharmacy for advice, try "Medicines to Midnight" on 520 6634.
- Use Topical pain relief. "Toothache Drops" available at pharmacies or a clove from the spice drawer held against the painful tooth can temporarily relieve pain. Sometimes applying some cold water regularly helps to reduce the pain.

ABSCESS:
An abscess presents as a local swelling associated with one or two teeth. The swollen area is usually sore to touch or press on (avoid pressing on it) and one or more teeth will be sore to bite on or touch. This is a serious infection that will need treatment soon. Arrange a dental appointment as soon as possible.

- Use heat. A hot water bottle wrapped in a towel and held gently against the face in the area can help (do not press onto the swelling as it will spread the infection). The heat acts to increase blood flow which helps to fight the infection and may "draw the infection out" encouraging drainage toward the heat source.
- Seek Antibiotics. Painful swellings in the mouth are almost always infection. If you cannot access dental care for some time go to a doctor, A&E clinic or Hospital and ask for antibiotics to start fighting the infection.

Please Note: If you have severe facial swelling that is causing an eye to close or significant swelling in your throat area, you have a medical emergency. Go directly to a hospital emergency department or call 111 if you have no transport.

BROKEN SHARP TOOTH:
A broken tooth can be quite painless itself but very sharp, cutting and scraping your tongue. Of course your tongue won't stay away from the sharp edge and ends up quite sore. If you are brave enough, you can do some "DIY" dentistry in these cases. Get hold of some fine grit sandpaper (1000 grit ideal) or even a nail file and CAREFULLY smooth off the sharp edge of the tooth. Be careful with a nail file in particular as you can hurt your gums if you slip. If you are not sure of your abilities, don't do it. If you do, it is at your own risk and it will only be a temporary fix. You need to see a dentist.
Please note this is only a one off option to relieve a sharp tooth. Regular use of sandpaper or other abrasive materials on teeth will cause severe damage to them.

INJURED TOOTH:
An injury to the mouth can break a tooth, push a tooth out of position or even knock an entire tooth out.
If a tooth is chipped or knocked out, try to find the tooth or chipped fragment, rinse it under clean water and store it, ideally in milk or if unavailable water or even your cheek. Do not scrub the tooth, particularly the root. Book and bring it to your dentist as soon as possible.
If the tooth is pushed out of position, avoid biting on the tooth until a dentist can treat.
If any bleeding occurs from injured lips, apply pressure with a clean cloth or tissues. Apply an ice pack to the injured area.

Take oral pain relief as required.
